TikTok shows its powerful reach with this one trick
TikTok asked its users to oppose a House bill that could ban the popular app in the U.S. or at least put a wall between it and its Chinese owner. It gave the number for people to call their House representatives by making just a few taps on their phone screen from the app. Some congressional offices were flooded with calls, many of which were angry, uninformed, or hang-ups.
The exercise backfired. It showed lawmakers just how powerful China can be with this app to mobilize a veritable army of Americans.
“I think TikTok made our case for us today,” said Ohio Republican Rep. Bob Latta, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce’s panel on communications and technology. The bill passed out of committee on a bipartisan unanimous vote of 50-0.
