A Place that’s Always Been
About 100 fishing boats were anchored out in a protest in the mouth of the Naknek River. The problem is that there is just not enough demand for the sockeye, so the price is low.
This is economics — but in a “place that’s always been,” they don’t always understand basic supply and demand economics. They didn’t want a mine that would have diversified the economy of the region, and now they complain that their fish are not marketable because the commercial freezers of America are still full of last year’s sockeye. So they are calling for a strike to drive prices higher.
That might work but salmon don’t wait around at this time of year.
Is this a strike that Rep. Mary Peltola will support, along with the rail strikes, actors strikes, and all the other strikes she has pushed in her “summer of strikes”?
