Klondike Highway slide update
We do live in landslide-avalanche country, after all. The landslide across the South Klondike Highway between Skagway and Carcross may be cleared today for daytime passage, one lane only, with a pilot vehicle. Yukon crews are working fast and furious to move a mountain of rubble and tourists’ and travelers’ plans have been revised. Those with vehicles heading north toward the Alaska Highway are being rerouted through Haines from Alaska state ferries.
Yukon Highway Department says the road will reopen Friday, July 26 between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.
Check 511Yukon.ca for updates.
Soldotna Progress Days starts today

Fact check Friday
RNCC fact-check of Mary Peltola’s most unhinged comments this week:
PELTOLA: “I as a rule do not believe in endorsements”
REALITY: “Peltola endorses Biden for president” –Anchorage Daily News
PELTOLA: “I am not a super active person within the Democratic Party”
REALITY: Peltola was the Keynote Speaker at this year’s Alaska Democrat Party Convention, is a DNC Delegate and is the Co-Chair of a Democrat PAC fundraising for other Democrat candidates.
PELTOLA: “I am still keeping an open mind”
REALITY: Peltola posted hours later “I’m not voting for Trump.”
PELTOLA: “I am not being coy”
REALITY: Seriously? LOL
PELTOLA: “This is a very uncomfortable place to be”
REALITY: Fact check—TRUE
“Mary Peltola’s pathological lying hit new heights failing to cover up her unwavering support for Biden and Kamala Harris. Alaskans deserve better than a liberal liar like Peltola who has the audacity to pretend she’s not keynoting Democrat Conventions, endorsing Biden and fundraising for fellow extreme Democrats.” – NRCC Spokesperson Ben Petersen
Peltola spent 30 minutes with reporters on Tuesday but would not show her face
During her press availability with mainstream media, Peltola kept her Zoom screen black, hiding her face. She only showed it for a brief few seconds, when asked by reporters if they could see her for a moment so they could get a picture of her for their reports. Then it was back to black screen.
It got fixed, all right …
We recall they did actually change their headline based on Peltola staff demand.
We at Must Read Alaska don’t get demands like that from Peltola’s or anyone’s staff.
Democrat on TV says Peltola just trying to save her seat
On Bloomberg’s “Balance of Power,” Democrat Rep. Sean Casten of Illinois said the six Democrats who voted to condemn Vice President Kamala Harris over her handling of the border were thinking, “this helps me hold my seat and it doesn’t really matter” because it’s not binding and won’t be taken up by the Senate.
