Fire season
Speaking of fires, the Louise Creek Fire as seen from the Ridgetop Fire, above. There was a Temporary Flight Restriction over the fire area, 8 miles east of the 300-acre Ridgetop Fire near the Healy coal seam. Conditions have been relatively cooler and wet, which will help keep fire activity subdued as the state enters the season that typically sees more lightning-caused wildfires. D.Smiggs/AK DOF

Del Toro visits Anchorage
After getting the “what-for” from Sen. Dan Sullivan, Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro was glad-handing in Anchorage, where he and Mayor Dave Bronson discussed the importance of the Port of Alaska. Del Toro was here for the national 8(a) Association’s Alaska Conference, where he was the keynote speaker.
What is 8(a)? The Small Business Administration 8(a) Program offers assistance to firms that are owned and controlled at least 51% by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals, as defined by the federal government.

Scott Kohlhaas, a Libertarian, has filed to run for state office. He lost in the race against Rep. Andrew Gray, District 16 Anchorage, in 2022. In 2020 he ran against Rep. Ivy Spohnholz.
Sen. James Kaufman has filed for reelection to his Anchorage seat.
Rep. Frank Tomaszewski has filed for reelection to his Fairbanks seat.
