Video: Alaska satellite launch delayed by lightning
Plus, our interview with DC_Draino, the internet king of political memes
Good morning from Somewhere in Alaska!
The Pacific Dataport satellite was delayed by weather on Thursday, when a major thunderstorm rolled through Cape Canaveral, Florida complete with a bolt of lightning striking the tower in dramatic fashion. (Video here).
No components of the rocket were harmed by the lightning, as there are insulators and ground wires all around it. The next launch window is today (Friday) in the late afternoon. This Space X Falcon Heavy rocket will launch a satellite for rural Alaska. Original story here.

Murkowski is disappointed ERA didn’t pass in time, deadline expired
U.S. Senate failed to pass SJR 4, aimed at affirming the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.
Can we be honest here? The ERA is starting to feel unnecessary since even our senator does not appear willing to fight for what it actually means to be a woman.

Press conference: Governor is all-in on sales tax
It’s a different Mike Dunleavy than the one Alaskans elected. This one says he will propose a sales tax because Alaska cannot keep going without some sort of broad-based tax as part of a “long-term state fiscal plan.”
“To simply ride oil in a do-or-die situation for the state of Alaska is folly. It’s probably not a good idea,” Dunleavy said. He and Rep. Ben Carpenter appear to be leading the charge. Apparently getting a public vote on spending cap and tax plan is no longer on his agenda. The press conference was part of softening the target, and another part of this plan is removing those who are in the way.
