Election night
It was a late night, but we have some results for you, and more on line at MustReadAlaska.com later today.
Juneau leans ‘no’ to new city hall
The capital city is now doing mail-in elections, so there are still more ballots to be counted, but so far, the answer is “no” on a bond question that would tax Juneau property owners even more. Those recent property assessments seemed to have ticked off a lot of voters.
Kenai Peninsula election results
Besides Micciche winning for borough mayor, who else won in Seward, Homer, Soldotna? Check it out.
Fairbanks election results
The borough flipped the conservatives out, while the city itself stayed centrist.

She had a very decisive win (71%) for a second term in the conservative red heart of Alaska.
Peltola misses another historic vote, but tells Democrats to vote
She has the worst voting record in Congress, but tells people in Juneau and Fairbanks, and the unorganized borough, to be sure to vote. Sheesh.
Downing: Tell me government is too big without telling me it’s too big
Rep. Mary Peltola unwittingly showed something about that fish-family-freedom platform — we taxpayers are the fish leaping into the mouth of the hungry grizzly.
I appreciate all of the generous Alaskans who keep this project going!
Alaska life hack: Barrow sea ice cam is back online after summer outage
With Quintillion fiber optic cable back up and running, you can now watch the sea ice form and winter set in in the most northern place in America. Snow covers the ground in Utqiagvik. Go see the Beaufort Sea before the ice sets in!
ALEC: Education Freedom Index puts Florida first, Alaska 33rd
Alaska did well in homeschooling choice but the overall score is disappointing for a state that supposedly values freedom of choice.
Nobel Prize in medicine toes to mRNA Covid vaccine developers
Dr. Malone, inventor of mRNA vaccines, responds, and he says it all: "Kariko and Weissman get the Nobel, not for inventing mRNA vaccines (because I did that) but for adding the psuedouridine that allowed unlimited spike toxins to be manufactured in what could have been a safe and effective vaccine platform, if safely developed. Good to know."

Kevin McCarthy ousted as speaker
This story is shocking for Republicans and does not bode well for 2024 elections.
Update: The new speaker election is Oct. 11. Will the Democrats take control? Will Mary Peltola, who voted for Rep. Hakeem Jeffries 18 times for speaker, show up to vote?
Question of the week: One day left to vote.
This day in history
Oct. 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched the earth's first artificial satellite, Sputnik-1. The launch was a success and shocked the United States, which had hoped to accomplish this scientific advancement first.
