Earthquake coincides with Seward’s Day this year
Today is the anniversary of the 1964 Great Alaska Earthquake. The 9.2 quake struck at 5:36 pm and was the most powerful recorded earthquake in the United States and North America.
The anniversary of the quake, which originally occurred on Good Friday, happens on a Monday this year, coinciding with Seward’s Day.
Over the past 50 years, March 27 has fallen on Seward’s Day, the last Monday of March, eight times: 1972, 1978, 1989, 1995, 2000, 2006, 2017, 2023.
