It’s State of the State night
Gov. Mike Dunleavy will be ushered into a joint session of the House and Senate for his 7 pm State of the State Address this evening. Expect to hear about energy, food security, public safety, and education.
This will be the fifth he has delivered. Meanwhile, both the House and Senate meet at 11 am in separate floor meetings today for regular business. Follow along at www.mustreadalaska.com.
In Anchorage, another foot of snow, another remote learning day
It will be a day of shoveling, with a foot of new, dry snow. The city streets are plowed at this hour, state roads are still deep. Glenn Highway looks like a slow commute, and Anchorage students will be staying home and with a “remote learning” day.
Meanwhile, it’s an Xtratuf boot day in Juneau, with high wing warning and flooding, as yards and yards of the past weeks of snow melt in 46-degree weather and wind gusts to 60 mph.
In Haines, the Haines Highway was buried by an avalanche at Mile 20 on Sunday, and is currently closed until crews can safety remove the 15-foot deep snow on the road.
Fairbanks is -26 and will be as low as -48 this week, not getting close to zero until next week. Meanwhile, on Mars …

Nosebleed section for Assembly
At last week’s AEDC luncheon, the largest business luncheon in the state, the Anchorage Assembly was seated at a table in the far corner of the nosebleed section. Assembly Chairman Chris Constant was none too pleased about being at the kiddie table, and walked out during Mayor Dave Bronson’s remarks. Constant was muttering something about how he had had enough of it.
On the move
Nome’s Common Council will meet on Monday and consider a resolution approving an employment agreement between the City of Nome and Gregory Knight for the position of city clerk. Knight was a reporter at KINY in Juneau before serving as an aide in the Legislature and then relocating to Nome and becoming a reporter for KNOM.
Kaiser wins Kuskokwim 300
Pete Kaiser won the Kusko-300 for the 8th time on Sunday, ending the race with all 12 dogs he started with (one in the sled). It was -30 and lower during the race.
Kaiser is getting to “Legend” level in mushing history.

Jan. 27, 1973, the Paris Peace Accords were signed, ending U.S. participation in the Vietnam War. The accords called for the simultaneous withdrawal of U.S. troops and freedom for American POWs, followed by a political settlement of South Vietnam's future, which ended up being given to the communists of North Vietnam.
