The seat is currently occupied by Sen. Kelly Merrick, who in 2022 earned the second-lowest score for conservative votes from Republicans in the Alaska Legislature, as graded by the Center for Legislative Accountability, with Merrick only scoring slightly higher than Rep. Louise Stutes of Kodiak, who anchored the bottom.
