YOLO: Life, ice, tides come at you fast in Alaska
Plus, Anchorage Assembly won't pay Demboski wrongful termination claim
Good morning from Somewhere in Alaska!
Tough month for visitors adventuring in Alaska
Forget politics for a second: Avalanches, climbing falls, snow machine flips, quicksand with bore tides are taking their toll. Alaska is so unforgiving, even when you plan, but less so when you’re unfamiliar with the landscape. This month has had a lot of YOLO deaths.
Thank you for being a subscriber to Must Read Alaska, and I appreciate everyone who has chipped in to this conservative news project, now in its 8th year because of you.
Governor’s Sustainable Energy Conference
Various leaders in government and industry are at the Dena’ina Convention Center with the guv to talk about sustainable energy solutions in an “all of the above” theme, hosted by Gov. Mike Dunleavy for the second year. No sign of former Gov. Bill Walker this year; last year he made an awkward cameo. About 900 people are attending and/or hosting booths at the conference, including Department of State’s Bureau of Energy Resources Assistant Secretary Geoffrey Pyatt and Japan Ambassador Rahm Emanuel.
Pyatt will also meet students at the University of Alaska Anchorage “in support of the Department’s effort to improve Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility in the workforce.”
On Tuesday, Gov. Dunleavy signed SB 48, the carbon credit bill for forests. Dunleavy introduced SB 48 earlier this year to give the state authority to develop carbon management projects on state lands, sell carbon offset credits, and lease state lands for carbon management purposes. The law could generate revenue for the state, enable more active forest management, and will ensure continued public access.
Road & Track: Biden narrows list of electric vehicles eligible for tax credit
The government gives and the government taketh away. The Biden Administration’s Inflation Reduction Act significantly raised the bar for federal tax credits for electric vehicles, making it more difficult to get the full $7,500 tax credit.
AG Taylor letter asks court to axe Mexico lawsuit against gun makers
This is not the type of defense you would have seen under a governor Bill Walker or Les Gara. This is defense of Second Amendment and sovereignty work.
‘Spread-out-the-homeless plan’ to be discussed by Assembly on Tuesday
Rather than a one-stop navigation center for the homeless, the idea is to disperse them everywhere and spread the pain out. It will also cost more to manage several of these sanctioned encampments, coming soon to a neighborhood near you.
Plot twist: Alaska man popped with drugs used brother’s identity at booking
Weird news of the day: The Troopers thought they had one man, but it turns out he gave them his own brother’s info. He’s charged with a bunch of felonies, including having deadly fentanyl. Of course, we checked and he was quickly out on parole.
Double-dipper: Peltola’s chief of staff is making out like a bandit this year
He’s not from Alaska but he’s both her campaign manager and he chief of staff, paid from both accounts - official and campaign. Very much edging toward illegal, but he’s keeping a low profile, will be hard to catch.
L.A. Dodgers to honor lewd anti-Catholic group at home game
The stupidity went back and forth until the baseball team caved and decided to honor the lewd and lascivious trans-activist group Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, which desecrates the sacred rites of Christians. Bud Light evidently did not teach Major League Baseball a lesson.
Rep. Josiah Patkotak files for mayor of North Slope Borough, and Eagle River Rep. Jamie Allard signs back up for House
Rep. Josiah Patkotak was the first sitting representative out of the gate on Monday morning, filing his letter of intent to run for office.
But he’s not running for Alaska State House again — he’s running for mayor of North Slope Borough, America’s most northern community.
Alden Thern is acting CFO of Anchorage
Mayor Dave Bronson named Alden Thern to serve as acting CFO after Grant Yutrzenka resigned last week. Thern is a longtime municipal employee who oversaw FEMA reimbursements and the rehabilitation of the SAP municipal software.
Municipal Manager Kent Kohlhase was unanimously confirmed by the Assembly.
Assemblyman Chris Constant to Planning Department: You’re lying and I don’t trust you
The Assembly chair became combative with his fellow members and dumped the entire Planning Department in the grease by calling them liars when he didn’t get his way.
Assembly won’t settle wrongful claim by former Muni manager
The drama is ahead in court. The Anchorage Assembly wants this to go to trial because all will be exposed in the administration and it will embarrass the mayor during an election year.

This day in history
May 24, 1844, Samuel F.B. Morse transmitted the message "What hath God wrought" from Washington to Baltimore as he formally opened America's first telegraph line.

Bob Bird: Tribute to a truly decent man
Like juggling chainsaws, Dan Gensel would get to the station at 5:15 am (often after calling games late into the night), start doing his pre-recorded sports report, join in early-morning banter and follow the usual routine from 6-9 am.
Sean Murphy: Eaglexit and the authority of school boards in Alaska
This is the second part of our series of articles to describe an education model for the new Chugach Regional Borough. After all, isn’t it always about the future?
Downing: Democrats have a zombie problem
Not to be unkind, but between Feinstein, Fetterman, and Biden (not to mention Sanders and Pelosi) it is the Night of the Living Dead running our country.

Be in alignment with the school that your children attend. If you are not, you’re not going to like the results.
